ABC’s of TOHS

ACCIDENTS: Any student injured at school should report promptly to the teacher in charge, the health clerk, or an administrator.

AUTOMOBILES & PARKING: Parking for students on school grounds is limited. Juniors and Seniors wishing to bring a private vehicle on the campus must comply with rules and regulations established by the office. All cars must have permits to be parked in the student parking lots. Students are not to loiter in or around cars in the parking lot, but must come onto campus upon arrival at school and leave promptly when school is dismissed. Students are to park in an authorized lot only, and may not park in the faculty parking lots, the Community Center lots, the “Dominos” lot, or other unauthorized areas on or off campus. The parking permit cost is $25.00. Please go to the Student Store with your current registration, valid CA license, and application to purchase a permit. Parking privileges are limited to Juniors and Seniors. Priority will be given to Seniors at the beginning of school. Available spaces then will be selected through a lottery system. Student drivers are subject to suspension or other disciplinary measures in cases where school regulations are violated. Students who drive cars are urged to drive carefully at all times, thus avoiding injury, property damage, or even death. Reckless driving on school campus will result in revoking of parking permit/privileges, 5-day suspension, and police will be notified. Cars parked in school lots are subject to search, whether a student possesses a permit or not.

Parking Violations will result in:
1st Offesne: Warning sticker will be placed on the vehicle
2nd Offense: Saturday Work Study will be as
signed
3rd Offense: Locking Boot/ $50 fine

A locking boot will render the vehicle immobile; in those cases a warning sticker will be placed on the windshield and driver’s window. The school will not accept responsibility for any damage sustained to a vehicle if the student attempts to drive the vehicle with the boot in place. If the student attempts to remove the boot without authorization, the student will be suspended for damage to school property, and will be responsible for restitution to replace the school property.

If any student reproduces a school-issued parking permit and attempts to park on-campus, the student will receive a Saturday Work Study. Any student benefiting from a forged parking permit will receive a Saturday Work Study. All students involved will lose parking privileges for the remainder of the school year.

BICYCLES (students riding to TOHS): TOHS is not responsible for the security of the special enclosed area exclusively designated for the parking of bicycles and motorcycles, which is located behind the Industrial Arts Building west of the cafeteria service road. Students using the area are encouraged to secure their bicycles. NO BICYCLE RIDING IS PERMITTED ON CAMPUS. **Students MUST follow all traffic rules and regulations.**

CELL PHONES (ELECTRONIC SIGNALING DEVICES): Electronic signaling devices will not be permitted to disrupt instruction, instructional programs, and/or school-related activities. Electronic signaling devices must be completely turned off during all classes. TOHS and the CVUSD assume no responsibility for the protection of, loss of, or damage to any electronic signaling device.

DIGITAL CAMERAS, IPODS, MP3s, AND OTHER ELECTRONIC DEVICES: Are not permitted to disrupt instruction, instructional programs, and/or school-related activities. They are not to be used during school time and can be confiscated by teacher if they are not completely turned off during ALL classes. TOHS and the CVUSD assume no responsibility for the protection of, loss of, or damage to any electronic device. It is unlawful to photograph or record any individual without prior permission.

DRESS CODE: A Dress Code Committee of parents, students, and teachers met several times to review an important area of our school climate. It was determined that clothing should be a positive reflection of individuality within the guidelines that promote a productive school environment. Our primary goal is to encourage young men and women to dress for success.

Dress Code Goals:

altPromote a productive school environment.
altSet a tone that TOHS is an educational institution where students should present themselves in a manner that promotes success.
altAffirm our commitment to “Zero Tolerance” for drugs, alcohol, tobacco and gang attire.
altPromote clothing that is associated with individuality and not conformity to any one style, such as a gang style.
altDemonstrate an awareness of school etiquette and manners by choosing not to wear a hat or any head covering (worn by a male or female) in a classroom or an office.
altStudents must also wear shoes at all times.

EXITING CAMPUS DURING THE DAY: Students are asked to exit campus through the tennis court gate by the field house (Flores), the north gate by the park or the east gate by the band room. Students are not to exit campus through the Administration Office at lunch or at the end of school day.

FORGOTTEN ITEMS/MESSAGES: Our receptionist does not deliver forgotten items to students. Please send lunches, books and homework with your students in the morning. If your son or daughter forgets a needed item, help to teach responsibility by allowing him/her to suffer the natural consequences of forgetfulness. Thank you!

GRADES: The subject grading policy of Thousand Oaks High School is to assign grades on the basis of a student’s relative achievement in mastering the subject matter in the classes in which he/she is enrolled. Letter grades are assigned for each subject at the end of each quarter. First and third quarter grades should be viewed as progress reports, changeable by subsequent work. Grades are assigned as follows: A-Superior; B-Good (above average); C-Average; D-Passing (below average); F-Fail (no credit); Inc.= Incomplete (becomes an “F” unless make-up work is received within two weeks after returning to school). Incompletes are given when protracted excused absence follows successful work. Incomplete grades become F's six weeks after the end of the semester.

HEALTH OFFICE: All students must have an up-to-date Emergency Card and a current immunization form on file. Students who cannot participate in a class for health reasons should bring a parent's note to the health clerk to obtain an excuse, prior to the activity. A note from a physician is required for an excuse of three or more days. Under no circumstances may students carry or distribute prescription or any medication on school grounds. If students require medication during school, it must be delivered to the Health Office with written instructions for dosage.
The health clerk is available during school hours and should be contacted when a student becomes ill or injured. Students who become ill during class time, MUST request a pass to the nurse from their teacher. Students may NOT leave school without first being cleared by the health clerk and obtaining a pass.

IDENTIFICATION: Students must have student ID cards in their possession at all times and be prepared to present it on request to any CVUSD employee. ID cards are required for access to library materials and the issuing of textbooks as well as admittance to all school activities, including PSAT, AP, and Exit Exams. Each student will be issued a free ID card. If the card is lost, a duplicate is to be obtained from the Campus Security Office. There is a $5 fee for a replacement ID and $15 fee for a replacement ID with an off campus pass.

JAYWALKING: Students are reminded that it is illegal to jaywalk across Moorpark Road and Avenida de Las Flores. Students must use the appropriate crosswalks that have been provided for pedestrians.

LIBRARY: The library is open every school day for the use of all students. Hours and policies are posted on the Lancer Library website:

library.tohs.org/index.htm

In order to provide the proper study environment for all individuals using the library, students are expected to abide by the following rules:

1. Students will study quietly and with regard for one another.
2. Students are NOT allowed to bring food or drink into the library.
3. During the school day students will bring appropriate passes, signed by their teacher, and sign in at the Front Desk.

Students are encouraged to obtain a Thousand Oaks City Library Card.

USE OF LIBRARY COMPUTERS:
Any student accessing the Internet or using electronic devices on campus is expected to abide by the rules and responsibilities for the proper use of those devices. Computer use may be revoked and disciplinary actions taken for improper use. A copy of the policy is available on the library website: library.tohs.org/index.htm. TOHS Acceptable Use Policy is granted by signing the student’s Emergency Card at beginning of each school year.

LIBRARY BOOK CHECKOUT: ALL STUDENTS MUST SHOW TOHS ID CARD for checkout of any library materials. The pupil, parent or guardian will pay for books damaged, destroyed or lost. Students may check out a maximum of three books at one time. Books may be reserved.

OVERDUE BOOK /MATERIALS POLICY:
*Checkout period is 3 weeks for most materials.
*Students expected to return materials on time.
*Repeated overdue materials can result in detention or other disciplinary actions.
**All overdue materials are subject to fines**

LOST AND FOUND: There are several areas in which lost and found articles may be located; Student Store, Textbook Room, and the Main Office.

MISSED WORK: Students with excused absences are permitted to make up any work or tests that were missed. It is the responsibility of the student to obtain the assignments, complete the work and turn it in promptly. Students must make up all work within a period of time equal to the number of days absent unless other definite arrangements have been made with their teachers. If a student is absent on the day that makeup work is due, it must be turned in the day the student returns to school. Students who miss classes by participating in school activities are expected to get assignments BEFORE missing class.

Suspensions: A suspended pupil shall be allowed to complete all assignments and tests missed during the suspension which can be reasonably provided and, upon satisfactory completion, shall be given full credit. The teacher of any class from which a pupil is suspended shall determine what assignments the pupil must make up and in what period of time.

PARENTS’ GROUPS: Thousand Oaks High School benefits from the activities of many important parent support groups. The PTSA and parents’ booster groups provide valuable volunteer assistance for numerous school activities and programs. The Site Council is an advisory board of parents, students, and faculty that meets monthly to review school programs, operations and approve and monitor the school’s improvement plan.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION CLOTHING: Physical Education clothing may be purchased from Thousand Oaks High School or a local store of your choice. The purchase of Thousand Oaks High School Physical Education clothing at the student store helps support student activities.

REPORT CARDS: Report cards are issued at the end of each quarter. The grades at the end of the first and third quarter are progress reports, while the first and second semester reports are final grades and will appear on the transcript. The last day to drop an elected class without penalty of an “F” is one week after the first and third quarter report cards are mailed. Progress Reports are issued four times each year. These reports reflect the student’s current progress in courses at the midpoint of each quarter. Not all students will receive Progress Reports. Reports are normally submitted when students are performing at less than average (C) level.

SEARCH OF PERSONAL PROPERTY: State law allows personal possessions to be searched whenever a school authority has a reasonable suspicion to believe that there is possession of illegal or unauthorized materials. This authority also includes the inspection of lockers and vehicles. Such inspections may be conducted without the student's consent and without a search warrant. Random classroom/locker/vehicle searches utilizing a drug/weapon-sniffing canine will also occur.

SENIOR CLASS EXPECTATIONS
Students’ Rights: As members of the Class of 2009, students will be eligible to participate in senior class activities throughout the school year, culminating in the graduation ceremony, when they maintain a satisfactory record of behavior and complete the requirements of the Board of Education.
Students’ Responsibilities: Each senior and his/her parent or guardian must sign an “Activity Participation/Graduation Contract” ensuring that the student will abide by all school regulations relating to students in general and seniors in particular.
Consequences: Loss of senior privileges and activities including possible exclusion from the graduation ceremony.

STUDENT ACTIVITY CARD (SAC): Students purchasing a Student Activity Card will receive free admission to all home athletic events (except CIF playoffs) and discounts to all dances, yearbooks and other events during the school year. Student Activity Cards are highly recommended because they support numerous school events.

TEXTBOOKS: Students must have their I.D. cards when checking out textbooks. All textbooks are due at semester break (if it is a semester class) or at the end of the school year.

LOST TEXTBOOKS: If a student loses possession of his/her book and needs to replace it, he/she must pay for the lost textbook first. If the book is found, he/she will receive a refund given through the District Office. All textbooks must be turned in at the end of the school year. If books are still outstanding, the student will not receive new books for the following school year.

VISITORS: Entering campus without permission is considered trespassing because TOHS is a “closed campus.” Parents and visitors must check in through the front office and obtain a visitor's pass before visiting the campus. Students may not invite visiting friends or relatives to spend the day in their classes. In addition, a student who is suspended may not come onto campus.
