From the
Principal’s Desk--April
08
Dear Parents,
It was a great run! Congratulations to the Girls’
Varsity Soccer team who are Marmonte League
Champions, C.I.F. Southern Section Division II
Champions, and the C.I.F. Southern California Division I
Regional Runner-up. On the way to the Division II
championship, the Lady Lancers erased a 2 – 0 halftime
deficit in the quarter-final game to win in the second
sudden death period. They faced three nationally ranked
teams in the regional playoffs, defeating Torrey Pines
High School, who was ranked number one in the country,
and San Clemente High School. In the finals, they played
a hard-fought game against Wilson, Long Beach who will
most likely be ranked number one in the country. Head
coach, Geoff Raives, and Assistant Coaches, Marissa
Zambetti and Terin Carvalho molded a talented group of
athletes that embodied a “TEAM” philosophy. As these
young women move beyond TOHS, they will look back on
this season with a smile and a sense of accomplishment.
Be Proud! I would also like to thank the parents, the
fans and the “Green Hole” who supported our team
throughout the season.
Other winter teams that played in post-season games
were: Boys’ Varsity Basketball, Boys’ Varsity Soccer,
and Girls’ Water Polo. The wrestling team advanced to
the CIF Duel Meet Championship, but lost in the semi
finals. I appreciate our coaches who serve as positive
role models for our athletes and our student-athletes
who play each game to the best of their ability with
good sportsmanship.
The California Standardized Testing and Reporting
(STAR) program tests will be administered at
Thousand Oaks High School on April 28, 29, and May 5,
2008. The purpose of these tests is to provide
educators, parents, and the community with an objective
basis for evaluating educational programs locally and
statewide. Student scores may be used for individual
student placement as stated in the High School Course
Directory.
Brian Ginell, Chris O’Shea, and Daniel Garvin were
honored by the 12th District PTA for their outstanding
entries in the National PTA Reflections Program.
Daniel earned an Excellence Award and will have his
entry in Visual Arts forwarded to the California State
PTA.
Our Academic Decathlon team placed 5th in the
county competition. Team members have become experts on
the Civil War. Medal winners included: Mike Freida,
Mangala Kanayson, Josh van Rijn, Alex Johnson, Stephen
Marsh, and Michael Belko. In People v Palmer, our
Mock Trial team served as the prosecution, the
defense, and key witnesses. They placed 8th in the
county competition. Mary Budny spends many hours, days,
and weeks preparing our students for both the Academic
Decathlon and Mock Trial competitions.
Our National Merit Finalists this year include:
Kathryn Baumgarten, Stephanie Bonds, Young Kim, Annelise
Mah, Brian Moon, Karly Noblitt, Abigail Sassoon, and
Kenneth Wang. Brian Casebolt, Eric Christensen, Kyle
Crown, Spencer Gulbronson, Marina Piper, Whitney
Robertson, Wayne Sun, Michael Whalen, and Calvin Wiley
were commended in the 2008 National Merit
Program. Congratulations to these outstanding students
for their academic achievement. They are among the
academic elite. Each one of them can point to a teacher
or teachers who played an important role in their
academic success. I am confident that the teachers at
Thousand Oaks High School prepare all our students to
leave Thousand Oaks High School and become successful
and confident adults
Several new teachers have joined our very talented
faculty and are rapidly becoming Lancers. Jane
Carlson has a B.A. in English and a M.S. in
Administration. She served as a Principal Intern at Juan
Cabrillo Elementary School in Malibu from 2003 – 2005.
Prior to that, she taught English, served as the Work
Experience Coordinator, and as the Co-Director of the
school-within-a-school academy with a
construction/engineering focus at Ruben Ayala High
School from 1995 – 2003. Other highlights of her career
as a high school teacher include: co-chairing a 25
member English department, designing and teaching an
interdisciplinary curriculum in collaboration with
science, math, history, art, and creating and advising a
film club. Christine Powell, our new special
education teacher, has an extensive background in
several schools including: Limits Elementary School in
Honolulu, Hawaii, Mililani High School, in Mililani,
Hawaii, the University of Hawaii, Herndon High School,
Fairfax, Virginia, and the American International School

she enjoys training for and participating in marathons.
Thank you for your continued support.
Sincerely,
Tim
