The Prez Sez . . .

Spring is here! I hope you had a great spring break. If you are the parents of a junior or senior, you may have been visiting some college campuses. Selecting a college is a big decision. As parents, it is our job to listen to our children and help them make a decision that is best for them. Most of all, we want them to be happy with the choice that they have made.

If you have been on campus on a Tuesday night recently, you know that TOHS has been hosting the school board meetings in our performing arts center. The decision to close two elementary schools in our district has been a very difficult one for everyone concerned. I know that we will work together and we will get through this no matter the outcome.

It is now time for us to come together and deal with another budget crisis. The proposed state budget cuts to schools could be about $800 per student. This could mean a funding reduction of as much as $2,000,000 just for Thousand Oaks High School. There is something each of you can do to help make sure this doesn’t happen. Contact your legislators!  On our website, www.tohsptsa.com, I have provided a sample letter that you can use and addresses, so that you can write to our legislators. These budget cuts directly affect our schools, our kids, and their future. According to a report released last month from Education week, California spends $2,000 less per student than the national average.  Other recent studies have shown that California seriously under funds its public schools, with New York spending 75% more than California. If ever there was a time to get involved, it is now.

If you would like to learn more, please go to the California State PTA website at www.capta.org. I encourage everyone to become educated on this very important topic, and make sure that our voices are heard in Sacramento.
